Character.AI ("we", "us" or "our") respects your privacy and is committed to handling personal information responsibly. This policy explains what we collect when you visit our website or use our applications, why we collect it and how you stay in control. It applies to every product that links to this page, regardless of country.

By using Character.AI you confirm that you have read this policy. If you disagree with any part of it, please stop using the service. Where local law gives you stronger rights than those described here, we honour the local standard.

02Information we collect

We try to collect only what's necessary to deliver a reliable, personal product. Your data falls into four practical buckets:

• Account data: name, email, avatar and the authentication provider you choose (Google, Apple or email).
• Conversation data: the characters you create, the chats you exchange and any pinned memories you set.
• Device data: device type, operating system, browser, language preference, time zone and a non-identifying installation ID.
• Usage data: pages visited, buttons tapped, error logs and aggregated performance metrics.

03How we use your information

We use the data above to operate, secure and improve Character.AI. Specifically, that means authenticating your sessions, syncing your conversations across devices, personalising recommendations, fighting abuse, processing payments, sending essential service emails and analysing trends to plan new features.

We never use the contents of private conversations to target ads, and we don't sell your information to third parties. Where we rely on a legitimate-interest basis, we balance that interest against your privacy expectations and document our reasoning internally.

04Information sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only in the limited cases described below, and always with appropriate safeguards.

• Service providers — vetted vendors that host our infrastructure, process payments, send emails or analyse aggregated metrics. They act under written instructions and may not use your data for any other purpose.
• Legal compliance — when we receive a valid request from a competent authority, or when disclosure is necessary to protect a person's safety.
• Corporate events — if Character.AI is involved in a merger or acquisition, we will notify you before any information transfer occurs.

05Cookies & tracking technologies

Character.AI uses cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your language preference and measure how the product is used. You can disable cookies in your browser at any time, but parts of the experience (notably, staying logged in) may stop working as expected.

We distinguish between strictly necessary cookies, which we always set, and analytics cookies, which honour your "Do Not Track" signal. We do not run third-party advertising trackers.

06Data storage & security

Your data lives on encrypted servers operated by leading cloud providers in the regions closest to you. Information is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256). Access is limited to the minimum number of engineers necessary to operate and support the service, and every access is logged.

We perform regular security reviews, run a coordinated vulnerability disclosure programme and rotate keys on a strict schedule. No system is perfect — if a breach affects you, we will notify you and the relevant regulators within the timelines required by law.

07Your rights

You have meaningful control over your data. From Settings → Privacy you can:

• Access — download a portable archive of everything we hold about you.
• Correct — update profile information at any time.
• Delete — remove individual messages, single chats or your entire account.
• Restrict or object — opt out of training, analytics and non-essential emails.

08International data transfers

Character.AI is a global product. To deliver fast responses everywhere, we may transfer your data to servers outside your home country. When that happens, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses, the UK International Data Transfer Addendum and equivalent mechanisms recognised by your local regulator.

09Children's privacy

Character.AI is not directed at children under 13 (or the higher minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children below that threshold. If you believe a child has signed up without parental consent, please email [email protected] and we will delete the account promptly.
